VCD player

The VCD player was the “fancy” gadget in many homes in the late 90s. Press a button, the disc tray slid slowly out, you placed the disc in and it slid back, and the TV flashed a few lines of text before the picture appeared; everyone held their breath.

The family rented a series on several discs and watched a few episodes every night; a scratched disc meant wiping it on your shirt and trying again. Some homes turned the VCD player into a karaoke set and sang late into the night, until the neighbours got used to it.
