Cotton candy

Cotton candy was the most eye-catching of all the little treats: a handful of sugar spun into fluffy threads, bigger than your head, often dyed pink or blue. The seller stood beside a round machine, twirling a stick or a paper cone to wind on ring after ring of shimmering sugar thread, and kids watched more raptly than they would a circus.

Held in your hand it looked like a cloud, yet one bite and it dissolved into a drop of sweet water. It stuck to your face and even your hair, and your mum took one look and knew you had been to the school gate again.

Do you remember? What was your favourite colour of cotton candy as a kid?

A pink cloud of spun sugar that melts the moment you bite it, sold at the school gate and on festival days, bigger than your own head.
