Pager

Before mobile phones were everywhere, people wore pagers on their belts. To send a message you phoned a switchboard and read out the pager number and your message for the operator to type in.

The pager beeped, a short line of text or a phone number appeared, and the receiver had to go and find a public phone to call back. Wearing one back then made you look very important.
