Slingshot

Nobody bought a slingshot; you made one. First you hunted for a guava fork or some hard branch that split evenly in two, peeled it, then tied on two rubber bands and a piece of leather cut from an old sandal or a broken wallet. Once it was done you felt like a hunter.

The best targets were milk tins lined up along a wall, ringing out when you hit them. Hitting someone's window meant running for it, so most children's slingshots met the same end: confiscated by mum or a teacher and left on top of a wardrobe.

Do you remember? Who finally confiscated your slingshot?

A Y-shaped fork of wood, two rubber bands and a scrap of leather: the homemade toy every grown-up wanted to confiscate.
