Squared-paper notebook

The squared notebook had small, perfectly even squares so you could learn to write letters the right size on the right line. At the start of the school year the whole family sat down to cover them: paper cover, a plastic wrap on the outside to last, and a label with your name, class and school in careful handwriting.

You wrote in ink, and one slip spoiled the whole page, so every kid held their breath and gripped the pen tightly. Those childhood notebooks are still somewhere in a drawer, and opening one you find your own handwriting from long ago.

Do you remember? What colour was the first notebook you covered yourself?
