Cassette tape

Cassettes were a whole world: albums from the shop, tapes you recorded off the radio by waiting for the song you loved to come on, English lessons, bedtime stories for kids.

Rewinding in the player ate batteries, so everyone knew the trick of sticking a pencil in the hole and spinning it. When the player chewed the tape, you patiently untangled it, smoothed it out and wound it back in. It still played, just a little crackly.
