Lucky money envelope

On the first morning of Tết, in brand-new clothes, you folded your arms and wished your grandparents a long life, and got a red envelope printed with golden apricot blossoms. Inside was a crisp new note that still smelled of the bank.

Before you could even count it, mum would say: “Give it here, I'll keep it safe so you don't lose it”. Hardly any child ever saw that money again, but the empty envelope stayed tucked in the pencil case until summer.

Do you remember? Did your mum ever “keep your lucky money safe” for you?
