Paper pinwheel

A square of paper, slit from each corner towards the middle, four edges folded into the centre and pinned to a bamboo stick or an ice-lolly stick, and there was your pinwheel. In the countryside kids made them from coconut leaves, long green blades that flapped as they spun.

When there was no wind, the whole gang held their pinwheels up and ran in opposite directions down the dirt road until they were out of breath and still laughing. Someone always ran bareheaded at noon and got told off at home, then asked for another sheet of paper that afternoon.

Do you remember? Was your pinwheel made of notebook paper, coloured paper or coconut leaves?

Four coloured paper blades folded and pinned to a stick: no wind needed, just run, and the faster you run the louder it whirs.
