Water pistol

The cheapest water pistol was a plastic bottle with a squeeze trigger; the fancy ones had a pump and a clear tank on top and could hit the far end of the alley. Fill up at the public tap or the big water jar behind the house, and the whole street split into teams.

Every battle ended the same way: soaked from head to toe, shirt stuck to your back, and someone accidentally hitting the neighbour who was taking his midday nap. Everyone scattered, and the crime was reported in full at dinner.

Do you remember? Did you ever accidentally hit a grown-up and have to run for it?

A bright plastic gun, filled up at the tap, became the deadliest weapon on the street on noons hot enough to roast peanuts.
