Picture cards

Picture cards were sold in stacks at the corner shop, or came free in packets of sweets and snacks. Every kid had a bundle held together with a rubber band in their pocket, shown off at break time, two duplicates haggled for one rare card like at the market.

Every street had its own rules for playing for keeps: flick them, slap them, blow them over, and the winner took the cards home. Losing them all meant a gloomy afternoon. The best card was never played with; it was glued right in the middle of a notebook cover so you saw it every time you opened it.

Do you remember? What was the rarest picture card you ever owned?

Little stacks of cards printed with cartoon heroes, footballers and masked rangers: collected, traded, won, lost and glued over every notebook cover.
