Wooden spinning top

The top was a small wooden toy, painted bright red and yellow on top, with a sharpened tip below. You wound the string tight around its body, hurled it at the ground and yanked the string: the top shot free, spinning so fast it stood upright as if it never learned how to fall.

The gang sat around a chalk circle in the yard, and whoever spun longest won; some kids even practised making it spin on the palm of a hand. A simple toy, but it was fun enough for a whole summer.

Do you remember? What's the longest you ever kept a top spinning?

A painted wooden top: wind the string, throw and yank, and it whirls: the game of long noons sitting on the courtyard floor.
