Gold game cartridge

The gold cartridge was a small plastic case that plugged into a four-button game console. Each held one game or several, and some carried a label like “999 in 1” that made every kid believe they could never finish playing in a lifetime.

You pushed it in, switched on, and the screen flickered into chaos. No problem: pull it out, blow hard onto the contacts, push it back, and as if by magic the music kicked in. Nobody could explain why blowing worked, but every kid did it.

Do you remember? Do you remember your first cartridge, and how many blows it took to run?

The gold cartridge you pushed into a four-button console; no picture means a puff of breath into the connector, try again, and the whole house cheers.
