Around the house
Hammock
On hot summer noons, every house strung up a hammock between two house posts or two tree trunks, in the shade. Dad lay reading the paper, Grandma lay lulling a grandchild, and a small kid swung back and forth watching leaves through the gaps in the sunlight. The hammock creaked, the most soothing lullaby there is.
Hammocks were woven in a net of many colours, rolled up and hung away in the evening. What you remember most from lying in one is Grandma's “ầu ơ” lullaby, mixed with the creak of the ropes, the cicadas and the electric fan turning round and round beside you.
Do you remember? Where was your family's hammock strung: indoors or under a tree?
