Đổi Mới (Renovation)

Before Đổi Mới, our grandparents and parents lived through the subsidy years: rice, cloth and kerosene bought with ration coupons, queues from before dawn, and money didn't guarantee you could buy anything.

From late 1986 the economy slowly opened up. In the years that followed, shops sprang up on every street, bicycles gradually gave way to motorbikes, and the 80s and 90s kids grew up alongside those changes.

Do you remember? Do your grandparents or parents still keep an old ration coupon?

In December 1986 the Sixth Party Congress launched Đổi Mới: the ration-coupon era gradually ended and markets and shops came to life.
