Pulled malt candy

The candy seller walked the streets with malt syrup wound round both ends of wooden sticks, sometimes sprinkled with peanuts. The moment the call rang out at the end of the alley, every kid ran to search under the beds for a sandal with a snapped strap or a bundle of dried chicken and duck feathers, because the candy could be traded for those.

You held the stick and pulled out a long strand that turned from amber to cloudy white, sticky on fingers and teeth, impossible to finish. Plenty of kids secretly hoped someone at home would break a sandal, just for an excuse to trade.

Do you remember? What did you ever trade for a stick of pulled candy?

Chewy malt syrup wound round both ends of a stick and pulled into glossy white threads, traded for broken sandals or a handful of chicken feathers.
