Tear-off calendar

At the end of every year each family bought a new block calendar, fixed it to a board with a landscape painting and hung it on the wall. One page per day: a huge number, Sundays and holidays in red, and the lunar date underneath.

Kids fought every morning over who got to tear off the page. The back might hold a proverb, a folk remedy or a riddle. When you reached the last few sheets, you knew Tết was coming.

Do you remember? Who got to tear off the calendar page in your house?
