Kerosene lamp

Power cuts were a normal part of life. The moment the lights went out, everyone hunted for matches, and grandma or mum took the lamp down from the shelf, turned up the wick, lit it and set the glass chimney back on top.

When the chimney went black with soot, you wiped it with old newspaper. Kids did their homework around the flame, then got bored and made dogs, rabbits and birds with their hands on the wall. When the power came back, the whole street cheered at once.

Do you remember? What did you do on power-cut nights?

The kerosene lamp of power-cut evenings: a soot-stained glass chimney, a little wick knob, and hand-shadow animals dancing on the wall.
