Electric rice cooker

It was cream-coloured and printed with roses and daisies. A red light meant cooking; when the rice was ready the lever flipped with a “click” to the yellow keep-warm light. Nobody used a measuring cup: rest a fingertip on the rice, and the water should reach the first joint.

Lots of kids had exactly one chore: put the rice on after school. Forget it and the whole family ate late that night, and you knew you were in for a telling-off.

Do you remember? Did you ever forget to put the rice on?

The flower-printed rice cooker, the lever that snapped “click” when the rice was done, and the familiar reminder: “Put the rice on when you get home!”.
