Around the house

Little “toad” desk fan

People called it the toad fan because of its low round base and hunched-over shape. It was small, cheap and nearly indestructible, so every house had at least one sitting by a bed or on the floor next to a sleeping mat.

On blazing summer afternoons, siblings fought over which way it pointed. And almost everyone has pressed their face to the grille and said “aaaah” just to hear their voice come out wobbly, like a robot in the movies.

Do you remember? Do you remember the first time you “talked to the fan”?

A squat little desk fan that looked like a crouching toad: it whirred through hot summer naps, and every kid talked into it to sound like a robot.
