Bánh mì chuột

Bánh mì chuột is a loaf barely bigger than your palm, also called bánh mì tí tẹo, and best known from Huế. The crust crackles, the inside is soft, and it is slit open and filled with pâté, meat and egg, then splashed with a spicy sauce, in the Huế way that is hotter than a Saigon bánh mì.

A loaf is gone in a few bites, so you can nibble as you stroll, one from this stall, one from that, without filling up. The funny name suits its tiny size perfectly. Anyone who misses Huế remembers that nose-tingling heat, the crunch of the crust and the warm paper wrapper.

Do you remember? Where did you eat bánh mì chuột, and how many did you manage in one go?
