Mooncake

On the full moon of the eighth lunar month the table held baked and sticky mooncakes, pomelo, persimmons and green rice. The mooncake was cut into eight and every kid hoped for the slice with the salted egg yolk.

Grown-ups drank tea and looked at the moon; kids came back from the lantern parade to raid the feast. The mixed filling had candied winter melon, Chinese sausage and melon seeds, and some kids picked out every seed before eating.

Do you remember? What's your favourite mooncake filling?
