The street
Ice-cream cart
On a scorching noon, with the whole lane half asleep, a tiny bell would tinkle down the alley. Every kid sprang up as if on a spring: the ice-cream cart! The seller pushed a cart under a striped umbrella, and when he lifted the lid a cool breath rose to your face.
Pocket change, or a few coins saved from Tết money, bought a stick of ice cream or a cone. It melted faster than you could eat it and ran down your wrist, and the whole gang circled the cart licking and running until it turned into another alley and the bell faded away.
Do you remember? Can you still hear how the ice-cream bell sounded in your neighbourhood?
