Rolling power cuts

In some dry seasons electricity ran short and each area was cut off on a schedule. Grown-ups clipped the timetable from the newspaper and taped it to the wall, filling water tanks and finding candles before the lights went out.

Kids loved it, though: no power meant playing outside. Neighbours carried chairs out onto their doorsteps and fanned themselves, the adults told stories, and the kids played hide-and-seek and blind man's buff until the lights came back.

Do you remember? What did you play on power-cut nights?

In the years of power shortages, the outage schedule was taped by the meter: the whole street sat on their doorsteps and kids played hide-and-seek by moonlight.
