The Y2K New Year

In late 1999 the papers were full of the “millennium bug”: many computers only stored the last two digits of the year, so 2000 might be read as 1900. People worried machines, banks and clocks would all fail at once.

On the night of the new millennium, families counted down together. The clock ticked over to 00:00 on 1 January 2000, the computers kept running, and the whole world breathed out.

Do you remember? Where were you when the year 2000 began?

On 31 December 1999 the world held its breath over the “Y2K bug”: could computers count into the year 2000? Then everything carried on as normal.
