The World Cup summer of '98

Matches often kicked off around midnight, but nobody could sleep. Families with a colour TV opened their doors to the neighbours, cafés spilled plastic stools into the road, and everyone had a team to cheer for.

Kids collected player cards, kicked plastic balls around the alley and fought over who got to be the striker. The next morning at school, last night's match was all anyone talked about.
