The Internet arrives in Vietnam

In the early days, going online was an event: plug the phone line into the modem, listen to it screech and hiss, wait ages for a single page, and watch the pictures appear line by line.

A few years later internet cafés sprang up in every alley. Kids went there to chat, play games and create their first email address, with a name they'd now rather forget.
