Virtual pet egg

In the late nineties every kid seemed to carry a plastic egg on a keychain. On its black-and-white screen lived a chick (or a dog, a cat, a dinosaur…) that had to be fed, cleaned up after, played with and put to bed on time. In Vietnam everyone just called it the “virtual chicken”.

In class you hid it under the desk, because teachers confiscated them. Some kids left theirs with a friend to babysit. Forget it for one day and the chick died, and the sadness was completely real.

Do you remember? How long did your virtual pet survive?

A plastic egg with a tiny screen: feed it, clean up after it, play with it, and feel real grief when it “dies” because you forgot.
