The last Tết with firecrackers

The grown-ups remember it well: at midnight the whole neighbourhood set off firecrackers, white smoke everywhere, and on the first morning red paper shreds carpeted the alley. Kids hunted for duds to light again.

From 1 January 1995 firecrackers were banned. Tết became quieter and safer, and the bangs were replaced by fireworks displays at midnight, watched on TV or from the riverbank.

Do you remember? How did your family welcome the New Year at midnight?
